One of the most common things I hear from my short-haired clients is, “I love the cut, but how do I keep it out of my face without just pinning it flat?” I get it. When your hair is too short for a bun or ponytail, it can feel limiting. Everyday life, whether you’re running errands downtown or stopping by the Bay Harbor Islands Branch Library, calls for simple styles that still look cute and intentional.

The Twisted Waterfall

This one looks fancy but is surprisingly easy once you try it. The real trick is choosing the right clip. Tiny clips won’t hold, so go for ones that actually grip even fine strands.

  • Take a small piece from the front, twist it once or twice, and secure with your clip.
  • Let a bit of hair near your face stay loose for softness and volume.
  • Repeat with two or three more sections until you’ve created a soft waterfall effect.

This style works just as well for the office as it does for brunch. Add a touch of light hairspray if you need it to last all day.

The Romantic Bobby Pin Twist

Bobby pins are underrated. With the right placement, they can give you a soft, polished style that holds all day. I love using what I call the “jackknife” method. Instead of pushing the pin straight in, slide it back and then tuck it toward your face. That way it stays hidden and secure.

  • Twist a piece of hair just behind your ear.
  • Secure with a bobby pin using the jackknife trick.
  • Do the same on the other side and pull a few strands forward to frame your face.

I often pair this style with a makeup service for clients who need a look that works for day and transitions to night.

No-Braid Braided Effect

If braiding feels too tricky, this option gives you that same effect without the work. It looks more detailed than it really is.

  • Split a top section into two strands and twist them together.
  • As you move back, add in small pieces of hair from underneath and keep twisting.
  • Secure near your ear with bobby pins and gently pull the twists apart for more texture.

This is perfect for workouts or long days in Miami’s humidity. Your hair stays in place but doesn’t look too tight or severe.

Mini Dutch Braids

For those who enjoy braiding, this style is a fun change of pace. Dutch braids sit on top of the hair, which makes them stand out more than a French braid.

  • Start at the front with a small section and braid it tight, pulling strands under instead of over.
  • Stop once the front is braided back, then secure with a hidden pin.
  • Repeat on the other side for a balanced look.

This is a favorite for clients who want something playful and practical, whether they’re headed to a yoga class or an afternoon outdoors.

Stylist Tips for Short Hair

  • Keep it soft: Leave a little hair near your face so the style looks natural instead of overly slick.
  • Good tools matter: A strong clip and quality pins make all the difference.
  • Light hold is enough: A mist of hairspray adds staying power without stiffness.
  • Don’t stress the first try: Once you’ve practiced a couple times, these styles become second nature.

Short hair doesn’t have to mean fewer options. It just pushes you to get a little creative, and honestly, that’s what makes these looks fun.
