Stylist Secrets for Calming Frizzy, Curly Hair in Florida Humidity

“Emily, how do you keep your curls from puffing up the second you walk outside?”

I hear that at least twice a week at LAHH SALON in Bay Harbor Islands. The air here always feels like a steamy beach day, and it takes about three steps out the door for curls to swell up. Even a walk past the Bay Harbor Islands Branch Library can undo an hour of styling.

I get it. I live it. So I want to share how I help my clients (and myself) keep curls soft, defined, and frizz-free, even on the stickiest Florida afternoons.

1. Hydrate First, Style Second

Most people try to fight frizz by piling on strong styling products. The truth is, frizz usually shows up when curls are thirsty. Without enough moisture, they puff up to grab it from the air.

  • Start with a gentle, moisturizing wash routine so curls feel soft instead of rough.
  • Condition well and detangle gently with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to avoid breakage.
  • Leave your hair slightly damp before moving on to any styling step.

I can always tell when someone has been skipping the hydration. Their curls look tired and stretched out. Once we get that moisture back in, they bounce right up again.

2. Style While Your Hair Is Soaking Wet

The second your curls start to dry, they lock into whatever shape they’re in. That’s why I always work with them while they are still dripping wet in the salon.

  1. Blot gently with a microfiber towel or a soft cotton T-shirt. No rubbing.
  2. Work through your hair in small sections so each curl gets attention.
  3. Let curls dry completely before touching them. Disturbing them too soon creates frizz.

This one shift makes a big difference. When my downtown clients head straight to dinner after their appointment, their curls stay smooth all night because we set the shape early.

3. Lock In the Moisture

Humidity is not the enemy. Dry hair is. Once curls are hydrated and shaped, they need a little help holding onto that moisture through the day.

  • Let your hair dry fully before going outside so the shape sets in place.
  • Avoid piling on more products the next day. Instead, lightly re-dampen and reshape any curls that got smushed while you slept.
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase so friction doesn’t rough up your curls overnight.

Clients are always surprised how much of their frizz disappears just from these small habits. Curls behave better when they feel supported, not smothered.

4. Keep Up With Regular Trims

Frizz often lives in the ends. Dry, split tips won’t curl, they just fuzz out. Keeping them clean and even makes every curl pop.

I recommend trimming curly hair every 10 to 12 weeks. It does not have to be a major cut. Sometimes just a quick dusting from one of our stylists, like Guy, Cindy, or Priscilla, is enough to bring life back to your shape.

Fresh ends curl together instead of fraying apart. That one change makes styling faster, easier, and way less frustrating.

5. Ask for Help When Curls Feel Stubborn

Sometimes frizz is not just about styling. It can be a sign your hair needs a reset. If your curls feel rough, dull, or completely unresponsive, that is when it helps to let a stylist step in.

Here at LAHH SALON, we create custom hair treatments designed just for curly textures. We look at how your curls feel and move, and choose what they actually need to feel healthy again.

Not long ago, a client told me she was ready to cut everything off because the frizz had taken over. Instead, we trimmed her ends, refreshed her shape, and built her a simple curl routine. A week later she came back smiling, her hair full of soft spirals again.
